Claiming that he is not mad at the United States (US) nor with China, the dispute on the West Philippine Sea is everybody’s matter, President Rodrigo Duterte said.
Surrendering the battle for the country’s territorial claim in the West Philippine Sea was one of the issues Duterte talked about in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.
The country should “just cool off” and pursue “diplomatic endeavors” to counter China’s sweeping claims in the area “unless we are prepared to go to war,” Duterte declared.
“China is claiming it, we are claiming it. China has the arms. We do not have it so it’s simple as that. They are in possession of the property… So what can we do? We have to go to war, and I cannot afford it. Maybe some other President can, but I cannot. Inutil ako diyan, sabihin ko sa inyo. And I’m willing to admit it. Talagang inutil ako diyan, wala kong magawa,” the president admitted.
